Christmas Caroling

November 15th, 2009

As the temperature starts to drop and the snow starts to fall Christmas feels the air. During Christmas getting around the piano and singing Christmas carols has always been a favorite of mine. Last year I put together Christmas carol books for the kids, it was so simple to do and the children loved helping with this project. Before you start make a list of the Christmas Carols you want to include and print however many copies you will need. I let the children decorate the front of their books anyway they wanted, making it their very own. This is something we will use every year to come, and I hope they remember how much fun we had when making them. Have fun this holiday season with your loved ones by spending time together, and visit the Christmas Carolers Blog for some old time favorites. Here is a list of items I used for our project.

Hole Puncher

The Tradition of Christmas Caroling

October 17th, 2009

When people think of Christmas music, one of the first things they likely think of is caroling. Going from door-to-door, singing holiday songs and bringing merriment and joy to others is what Christmas caroling is all about, but where did it begin? This article from the Christmas Caroling blog offers three of the most popular possible origins for the caroling tradition, ranging from protection from serial killers to trying to impress royalty.

Free MP3 Christmas Music Downloads

October 7th, 2009

If you’d like to add some Christmas music to your iPod but don’t want to pay for the songs or download anything illegal, you’ll love the site Feels Like Christmas. They archive free Christmas music MP3 downloads, with the artist’s permission. Artists can also submit their files to be distributed via this site. They don’t pay for music, and they don’t catalog anything that would require payment to go to the songwriter. (This means most of what you’ll find on their site is traditional Christmas carols that are in the public domain, sung by people who want exposure during the holiday season.) Give some new singers a try this year — check out their free downloads.

Giving Music a Role in Christmas Traditions

October 5th, 2009

Christmas music is one of those elements of the holiday season that we all assume will be there without fail–playing in the background at stores as we shop for gifts, popping up on the radio, and playing on television shows. Familiar Christmas carols mingle with new songs and remakes made by popular music artists, and hearing all of those Christmas tunes makes us all feel warm and fuzzy inside.

However, it can also be one of those things we take for granted, so we don’t make much effort to include the music of the holidays in our family traditions. Christmas music can play many roles in your family’s holiday traditions, from background support for the main attraction.

How can you work Christmas music into your family’s Christmas traditions? Here are some ideas:

  • Go around the neighborhood singing Christmas carols, or visit family and friends’ houses if you aren’t comfortable knocking on strangers’ doors.
  • Sing Christmas carols while in the car on your way to a holiday event or to pick out your Christmas tree.
  • Spend an evening singing your family’s favorite Christmas songs in front of your tree or the fireplace. Let each family member choose a song that everyone will sing.
  • Put in a few Christmas CDs to play while you decorate the tree, or listen to a holiday internet radio station.
  • Attend a Christmas choral concert. Most schools and churches offer a holiday concert of some sort, usually for a cheap price (and sometimes for free).
  • If some of your family members play instruments, create a musical evening where everyone joins together to play Christmas songs.
